What this app is
A private study helper for one Grade 11 student (physics and biology) and one parent. There are only two accounts and no public signup. It's run by Ron, a family friend, on his own server.
It uses AI. The lessons, quiz questions, explanations and marking are written by an AI system (Claude, made by Anthropic), not by a person or a teacher. AI can make mistakes. Every question has a "this is wrong" button, and nothing here replaces what the teacher says.
What we keep
- A first name, a username and a password (stored scrambled, so nobody can read it, not even Ron).
- The text the AI reads from uploaded notes and handouts, the lessons and questions made from it, quiz answers and results.
- How much active study time happens each day, and which topics are going well or need more work.
What we don't keep
- No email address, last name, school name, birthday or phone number.
- Photos are deleted as soon as the student checks what the AI read from them (or after 7 days if they're never checked). Photo location data is removed on the phone before uploading.
- The AI is told not to copy anyone's name it sees in the material (classmates or teachers).
Where the data goes
- Ron's server (rented from Hetzner, located in Finland) stores everything listed above.
- Anthropic (in the United States) receives the photos and text so the AI can do its work. Under Anthropic's rules for businesses, this data is not used to train their AI and is deleted within 30 days. The one exception: if their safety systems flag something as breaking their usage rules, they may keep it for up to 2 years.
- Backups are encrypted before they're copied to Ron's Microsoft OneDrive, so Microsoft can't read them.
- Nothing is sold, shared for advertising, or given to anyone else.
Because data is stored and processed outside Canada, the laws of those countries apply to it there. We follow the principles of Canada's privacy law (PIPEDA): collect only what's needed, use it only for studying, keep it only as long as it's useful.
Who can see what
- The student sees everything about her own studying, including exactly what her parent sees.
- The parent sees study time, which days the app was used, quiz results, and which topics are solid or need help. The parent can't change anything.
- Ron, as the person running the server, can technically access the data. He'll only look at it to fix problems or when asked.
How long we keep it
Until June 30, 2027 (end of the school year). In June, both accounts get a one-click download of everything. On July 1 it's all deleted, unless the family asks to keep it.
Your choices
- Stop using the app at any time.
- Ask Ron to download or delete everything, at any time, for any reason.
- Withdraw agreement at any time; the account and its data are then deleted.
Version 2026-11-01. Questions: ask Ron directly.
